OK, the house is not yet rented, we have not finished our jobs, not thought about packing ourselves or the house, have not figured out how we're going to teach our kids math and so much more remains undone. Yet, on January 3, we will be leaving our comfortable life and home in Santa Monica for 6.5 months on the road. We will be traveling and volunteering in each of Tanzania, Southeast Asia and Israel. For a full itinerary see our web site. Maya (age 13) and Emma (age 9) continue to be annoyed at the prospect of traveling and volunteering. However, we seem to be breaking their resolve as Melissa and I are starting to see some attitude changes. Either they will look back at this experience with amazement, or they will hate us. We're hoping for the best.
As I think about this trip, I'm unable to fully assess my motivations. On the one hand, I want to see the world with my family and engage in the world in a way that the typical two week vacation does not permit. On the other hand, maybe I just needed a change of scenery. Maybe this is in fact a mid-life crisis of sorts, channeled in a reasonably positive way. Who knows? Maybe it doesn't matter.

We will miss you guys! I'll keep up with blogs as long as Adam doesn't blabber on and on like he usually does.

Congratulations for acting on your "Bold Crisis." As I love to travel, I will definitely be living vicariously through you and will keep you posted on all the new baby activities in the Ikar community and beyond...
Much love,
Lisa Maxwell
What a wonderful day to start your journey! The weather here on the east coast is warm and sunny, perhaps an indicative omen of sorts to set an appropriate tone for your total adventure! ENJOY every moment of every day, and always remember all of your extended IKAR family as well!
Safe travels,
Marcia and Rick Brous
Hey guys,
You've only just left and I am missing that void of not being able to imagine you in your (Santa Monica) place. We wish you a wonderful trip, filled with exciting, thought provolking, memorable, life reaffirming experiences (each on your own appropriate levels) [That was the educator in me speaking!) We are promising to follow the blog and live vicariously through all of your writings. Although I am miffed that you have chosen to take this adventure instead of staying behind and helping us with our house search, I am jhoping that when you return to CA we will be able to offer you greeting in person and invite you to our home for Shabbat dinner.
Travel safely, and take careful notes giving serious consideration to signing the rights to allow David to serialize it on one of the major networks.
Hugs and other good stuff from,
Wendy and Ivan
Shalom!
WOW! What a great adventure! It shows koach and faith to travel like this. All I have to add is that if possible, pack as light as possible! Both physically and mentally.
Have great, safe and pure adventures!
Be very well,
Josh and Sara Lake
